Devotional Tea 25: Pray from the Heart

Scripture: Luke 11:3 (NIV)

Give us each day our daily bread.

Meditation:
If a pig could pray, it would pray for swill. What do you pray for? (Bertie Charles Forbes)
When you come to the place of prayer, what do you ask for? What words do you use? Do you come to impress, or do you come to obtain grace and mercy? Why do you come? Do you come to fulfill some religious obligation or to drink from the well of salvation?

Take the heart away from prayer, and it becomes mere rambling and killing of time. God wants you in the place of prayer. He wants you to come just as you are. He wants to hear your voice, not any others. He wants to commune with you. He wants to meet with the real you. He wants to take you from where you are to where you ought to be. Will you come?

Prayer: Lord, help me come to myself [Luke 15:17]. Deliver me from the pressure of wanting to impress you. Teach me to rest in your love and all that you are.

Those who pray from the heart do not think about the prayer they are saying, but about the God to whom they pray. (Saint Francis De Sales)
